Chatfield Supports Making English Official State Lingua

Rep. Lee Chatfield, R-Levering, is one of the co-sponsors of HB 4053.

According to MichiganVotes.org, the bill would “establish English as the official state language. This would apply to government activities, but not to private sector activity. It would require governmental documents, records, meetings, actions, and policies to be in English, but would not prohibit them from also being in another language.”

The bill passed 62 to 46 in the House on Feb. 22, 2018.

Thirty-two other states have decreed English the “official” language of government business.

Here’s the full text of the bill, all of its sponsors, and a fiscal analysis of it.

MI: Bipartisan Effort Promotes Transparency in Gov’t

State Reps. Lee Chatfield (R-Levering) and Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) unveiled a bipartisan legislation package, this week, to increase government transparency by subjecting the legislative and executive branches to open records acts. Chatfield said that the 11-package will subject the Legislature to a new Legislative Open Records Act (LORA), and the governor and lite governor to the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). He also said that Michigan is one of only two states that does not have access to the public records of the legislative and executive branches.

Quote: “We have a government that is intended to serve the people. It’s about time that the people have access to our records.
