To the editor:

The Army Corps of Engineers announced that construction of a new lock in Sault Ste. Marie has started.

While the project is a long-term three-phased project, the significance of progress should not be lost on us.

This is truly a “shovels in the ground” moment that can’t be overstated.

This project has been talked about for decades by dozens of politicians. Congressman [Jack] Bergman promised he would make this project a top priority when he ran his very first campaign in 2016, and sure enough, he held to his word.

We heard the President talk at his rally in Washington Township two years ago that it was time to fix the Soo Locks. While doubters continued to doubt, this was a pivotal moment for the project as Rep. Bergman and his colleagues had garnered the President’s support for this project.

We should all be proud of Representative Bergman and President Trump for fighting for our economy and country.
